In the Bicentennial year of 1976 STS was formed and produced its first full production, The Sound of Music. In 1978 STS incorporated as The Shandaken Theatrical Society, Inc. a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
The STS Playhouse presents live productions of well-known plays in the historic Shandaken Theater. STS has mounted over 80 full-scale productions and countless other smaller projects. Our productions include performers from all walks of life, from former professional to first time actors, college students, community theatre veterans, young folks, old folks, and local children enjoying their first stage experience. Our creative staff and our crew people dedicate their time and energies to provide a great venue and the most complete sets, costumes, props, lights, and sound possible.
Over the decades we have produced a diversity of events including musicals, contemporary and classical plays, original works by Hudson Valley playwrights, cabaret performances, a film series, our annual free family Christmas show, readings, events performed by local musicians, and workshops for adults and children. We are committed to keeping our ticket prices and fees as low as possible so our programs can remain accessible to everyone. We proudly support the village of Phoenicia as a theatrical ensemble, cultural space, and social venue.
In 2016 STS Playhouse will celebrate its 40th Anniversary.
